Fairbairn's Active Retirement

Fairbairn was 60 years of age at the end of the war. But his career did not end abruptly as most professional soldiers did because in the mid-1950's he found himself in Singapore in 1952, engaged by the Singapore Police to create a riot squad.

It is rumoured that President Truman, much to the distress of his bodyguards, on occasions sat alone with him in the oval office and had him talk about his experiences.

In 1956, at the age of 71 he was employed in Cyprus, by the Cyprus Police, where he taught riot work, point shooting, authored a riot manual, and developed a bullet-proof shield he called the "STONE" whose disciple can now be seen in use with S.W.A.T. teams.

It seemed that there was no end to this incredible man’s creativity since while still working in Cyprus, he designed and introduced a new knife (to be used for riot work) that he had been working on for sometime. Fairbairn called his new knife the "COBRA" fighting knife. His interest in this weapon as well as the system of knife fighting that supported it, continued after he left Cyprus and returned to England where he occupied his time up until his death. In June on the 20th day, of the year 1960 William Ewart Fairbairn passed away at the age of 75 at his home.
